On Sunday Jan.19 beginning around 5 pm there will occur a different kind of event, The “I have a dream” slam & jam. This event is of course in honor of, and inspired by the late-great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The intention of this event is not only to bring an eclectic group of people together enveloped within a unique mosaic of sounds and textures, but it is also to relate via tangible tastes in culture within a space occupying the historic YMI cultural center (THE BLOCK off biltmore).
We want to dare people to dream outside of the box, and to be free while also being creative, expressive and together. We will begin with a performance involving members of the slam team accompanied by live music, and as always also featuring special guests. It is also rumored that a partial recital of the famous “I have a dream” speech may occur on top of music.
Following the opening performance(s) we would love to continue with a bit of mash-up, “spontaneous combustion”. We will have a friendly teamwork competition consisting of the combined forces of one poet and one musician simultaneously, followed by an all-inclusive name in the hat/box voting process. The winning duo takes the pot! The slots will ideally center around a 5 minute time frame.

Please join us for this special event that also happens to coincide with the birth dates of Edgar Allan Poe and Janis Joplin!
$5 to watch.
$10 to compete
